Another Love Letter to My Daughter: Hailey Claire

Dear Hailey Claire,

It sounds like such a mom thing to say I can’t believe how fast you’ve grown, but it’s so true. (Someday I’m sure you’ll understand.) Oh, but what an awesome person you are growing into.

The one thing I would like you to know right now is there is no one right way to live life, no mold you have to fit. Often as women we are told we can be beautiful OR smart. We can be fierce OR feminine. I love what Emma Watson said, “Don’t let anyone tell you what you can and can’t do or achieve. Do what you want to do and be who you want to be.”  Be beautiful. Be smart. Be fierce. Be feminine.

I know how much you love fashion and makeup and all the pretty things. Don’t let others make you feel like pretty girls can’t be smart. I have seen you read book after book for hours on end. I have seen the creation you’ve engineered. I have watched you do algebraic equations just for fun. You are an incredibly smart, capable girl.

I know how much you love to twirl around and dress up. You’ve always carried yourself with grace. You love to bake (and chill) and make beautiful designs. But I love that you can also be fierce and show your tougher side. I’ve seen you outdoors, covered in dirt, ready to camp survivor style. I’ve seen you stealing and sliding into home even when it scared you. I’ve seen you speak up for injustices when it wasn’t easy. I hope you remember that being feminine doesn’t make you weak. You can be tough, strong all while twirling your way through life.

Happy 12th Birthday. I love you more than you know, forever and always.
